PS 307 receives National Science Foundation Grant for STEM Stories
Teachers College, Columbia University and PS 307 have received a National Science Foundation Grant for STEM Stories that will bring in $375,000 for STEM education at the Magnet school for STEM studies.
"Bringing the STEM Stories project to 307 is an incredible opportunity to honor the entire community’s perspectives and deepening understanding of STEM. Teachers College and the National Science Foundation have taken over where the Magnet Grant left off, allowing us to continue to provide students with an enriching 21st century program." - Stephanie Carroll, Principal PS 307
Teachers College at Columbia University has designed a research and development project that will entail in-depth work with two New York City public elementary schools that have racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse student populations due to gentrification forces in Brooklyn and upper Manhattan and a strong emphasis on STEM curriculum. PS 307 has been selected as one of the schools.
The overarching goal of this project is to strengthen school, family, neighborhood, and community ties through STEM learning and engagement. Through this project, they aim to develop students’ research and STEM skills; to develop and enhance elementary teachers’ curricular and instructional repertoires around STEM concepts; and to enhance and broaden parents’ understanding of STEM.
The National Science Foundation will allow Teachers College to work closely with PS307 on curriculum development and professional development over the next 3 years until 2021. The National Science Foundation is also known to extend such grants.
Through student research in Grades 3 to 5 on their own STEM stories within their homes, families, and communities, they will not only learn to use emerging technologies – including GIS mapping software as well as video and audio recording and editing – but they will also come to see the many ways they interact with mathematics, science and technology on a daily basis and how STEM subjects are tools that can assist them in learning and be used throughout their lives and careers.
PS 307 is a Magnet school for STEM studies from Pre-K through 5th Grade. The school accepts out-of-zone students for all grades. School tours for prospective families are taking place.
